On most campuses, safety conversations quickly turn to interpersonal harm: assault, harassment, crime and the policies that surround them. Those issues matter deeply and are the top priority at every higher education institution.
This guide focuses on a quieter category of risk: environmental safety. Think slips and falls on wet floors or icy paths, minor trauma and medical emergencies in classrooms and hallways, blocked exits, missing first-aid supplies or an AED that no one can find when seconds count.
These are the incidents that start in the built environment and end up as injuries, liability claims and hard questions for facilities leaders.

Each move is small enough to execute in 30 days, but significant enough to move the needle on environmental safety and risk on your campus. Each one comes with a clear picture of what real progress looks like - not in theory, but in the documentation and behaviors you can observe on your campus.*
*Those observable behaviors and documentation could also come in handy if you are ever asked by your administration, or even student organizations, to produce proof of proactive campus safety measures you have implemented as a facilities leader.
Move #1: Reduce slips and falls before they start.
Falls are one of the most common ways students and staff get seriously hurt on campus, whether from a slick entryway, a wet corridor or tracked-in ice melt.3 Floors and flooring materials contribute directly to more than 2 million fall injuries each year in the U.S.4
What you'll do:
Treat slip and fall prevention as a system instead of a reaction. That means:
- Right-sizing and placing entry mats at primary entrances so they actually catch debris and moisture.
- Standardizing when and where you use wet-floor signs.
- Stocking and using sorbents for spills that mops cannot safely handle.
- Tightening up seasonal floor maintenance and winter preparation so your floors can stand up to weather and traffic.
ISSA estimates that 60% of bacteria and debris are carried into buildings on people's shoes.5 The most effective way to prevent slips inside is to keep as much of that water, grit and ice-melt outside, or trapped in matting, before it ever hits your hard floors.
What real progress looks like in 30 days:
By the end of your 30-day challenge, you should be able to walk your top-traffic buildings and see:
- Interior mats covering at least 80% of each entryway's width with 6-20 feet of length, so people take at least two full steps on the mat.
- A consistent pattern: wet-floor signs appear before and during mopping and immediately when a spill is discovered, and sorbents are within reach in labs, mechanical spaces and docks.
What the data says:
- The National Floor Safety Institute notes that just a quarter-cup of water is enough to saturate a three-foot-wide floor area, which is all gravity needs to create a slip hazard.6
- Industry research cited by ISSA shows that 6 feet of matting can capture about 40% of debris from shoes, while 20 feet can capture up to 80%, directly reducing the amount of moisture and grit that reaches your floors.7
- U.S. courts have consistently held property owners responsible for maintaining safe walking surfaces, and premises liability cases frequently involve slips and falls, with a median settlement around $45,000 per non-fatal incident.8

Move #2: Make safety checks ultra visible.
Your team already does a lot of quiet safety work: restroom checks, entrance walkthroughs, mechanical inspections. But if no one sees it, it does not build trust and it is hard to prove when questions or claims come up.
What you'll do:
Turn existing checks in your highest-traffic areas into something people can see. That means:
- Posting simple inspection logs at restrooms and main entries.
- Standardizing what gets checked on those logs and how often.
- Requiring your staff to initial and timestamp the logs as they go.

By the end of your 30-day challenge, you should be able to:
- Walk into a restroom or lobby and see a current inspection sheet with recent initials and times.
- Pull at least a week of logs for your busiest buildings without hunting and point to one change you made, like adding floor matting or shifting a cleaning time, based on the results those inspections surfaced.

- Restroom research shows 8 in 10 people value a posted, updated cleaning schedule.9 Visibility matters and it aligns directly with OSHA's General Duty Clause requirement to address recognized hazards.10
Move #3: Run life-safety checks where they matter most.
Life-safety can feel overwhelming if you try to tackle every asset at once. A 30-day challenge works when you narrow the scope to a critical few areas with the highest occupancy or risk.
What you'll do:
Pick a small group of buildings, think student centers, big lecture halls, libraries, and focus on three things:
- AEDs and bleeding control kits.
- Class A first-aid kits.
- Primary egress route signage.
Then verify that:
- These items exist.
- They are complete and updated.
- Any item not at 100% is prioritized.
- Each priority building has some kind of awareness training or a one-page reference document, so people know where the gear is and how to use it.
What real progress looks like in 30 days:
By the end of 30 days, you should be able to show:
- A simple list of AEDs, bleeding control kits and first-aid kits in your priority buildings, with locations and last inspection dates.
- Evidence that expired AED pads or batteries have been replaced and that first-aid kits in those spaces meet ANSI Class A requirements.
- Egress paths and exits are clear and properly marked.
What the data says:
- When an AED is used within three minutes of sudden cardiac arrest, survival rates can reach 66.5%, versus 32.7% when victims wait for EMS.11 That’s a dramatic difference for a device that’s relatively easy to deploy and maintain.
- OSHA strongly recommends AEDs alongside first-aid supplies and points employers to ANSI standards for kit contents while encouraging organizations to go further with tools like bleeding control kits.12
Move #4: Make hazard reporting a real thing.
On any given day, your community of students, faculty and staff will often spot hazards before your facilities team can: leaks, loose handrails, cluttered corridors and blocked exits.
Here is the problem: how do they report these hazards to you?
If the reporting method is confusing or feels pointless, then human nature takes over. The would-be good Samaritans who wanted to report the hazard do not report it, and you only find out about it after EMS does.
What you'll do:
Give students and staff one clear, easy way to report environmental hazards. That means:
- Establishing a QR code, short URL or text number that routes directly to your team.
- Posting the reporting method in restrooms, stairwells, lobbies and other high-traffic spaces.
- Setting basic expectations for response and follow-up.
What real progress looks like in 30 days:
Within a month, you should be able to:
- Point to visible hazard-reporting prompts in your pilot buildings and show a short log of incoming reports and what you did about them.
- Share a simple you said, we did update with campus partners to reinforce that reporting leads to action, not a black hole.
What the data says:
- OSHA's General Duty Clause allows citations when employers fail to address recognized hazards; once someone has flagged a leak, damaged stair or blocked egress, inaction becomes a risk.13
- Slip-and-fall and premises liability data make it clear that many incidents stem from conditions occupants noticed beforehand, which are exactly the kind of issues a simple reporting channel can surface early.
Move #5: Increase safety signage in known risk zones.
When it comes to environmental safety, every campus has the usual suspects: the ramp that gets slick when it rains, the steep stairs where students rush between classes, the lab corridor where cords and carts creep into the path, and the entry that always collects ice melt. Ignoring these repeat offenders is an invitation for repeat incidents.
What you'll do:
Identify some high-risk zones on your campus, then double down on the signage you already have in place. That means:
- Adding more durable, relevant signage that cues specific behaviors: "Watch your step," "Use handrail," "Slippery when wet," "Keep clear-egress route," or "AED located on this floor near Room 210."
- Using floor markings, decals and wayfinding, especially where people's eyes naturally fall (at the top of a ramp, near a first step or around an equipment cluster).
- Reviewing these zones with a small group of students or staff to make sure the signs are actually noticed and understood.

Within a month, you should be able to:
- Walk through your top 5-10 risk zones and see specific, intentional visual cues that were not there a month ago.
- Connect those cues to your other moves, for example, wet-floor signs and floor markings at entrances where you have improved matting, or directional signage pointing toward AEDs and bleeding control kits you have just audited.
- Capture a few quick photos or notes that show before-and-after conditions for your own records and for use in internal communications.
