The Company
Garden City Hospital is a leading community hospital located on the outskirts of Detroit, MI. Committed to providing top-quality care for its patients, this state-of-theart medical facility has 323 licensed beds and more than 350 physicians across 47 specialty areas.
The Challenge
While pleased with its incumbent janitorial and cleaning supplies vendor, Garden City Hospital wanted to conduct due diligence to ensure that the organization was receiving the most cost-efficient and high-performing products. In addition to cost savings, the hospital was looking for more shipment and delivery flexibility, an easy-to use online ordering system and eco-conscious cleaning solutions. After careful consideration, hospital administrators decided to investigate additional vendors and solutions and put its business out for bid.
Customer Quotes
"We'll be the first to admit that we were hesitant to change vendors and move to a new brand of cleaning supplies. But Staples so clearly demonstrated the performance, cost and environmental benefits of its solutions, it was impossible to say no.
Understanding that education and training are necessary support services has ensured the successful adoption of Staples products within our hospital. The service that we received during the evaluation process gave the company a big advantage and Staples continues to demonstrate that commitment day in and day out. Staples is an extension of our internal team and the company has delivered on all of its promises."

Hospice of Charleston offers comprehensive end-of-life home medical care, as well as in-patient care, at its state-of-the-art facility. Established in 1980, the organization is dedicated to providing quality, compassionate services for patients and families throughout South Carolina's Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
The Challenge
To meet the needs of patients and families who are unable to manage an advanced illness within their home, Hospice of Charleston wanted to establish an on-site, in-patient facility that would provide around-the-clock care to those in need. With donations from the community, the plans quickly became a reality, and the organization built a 20,000 square-foot facility – The Hospice Center. Hospice of Charleston concentrates on making patients as comfortable and pain free as possible. Therefore, the organization needed an interior design partner who could create a safe, relaxing and home-like environment for patients and their loved ones. With specified funds, attention to budget was mandatory, as was patients’ privacy, and incorporating design elements that were child-friendly, durable and aesthetically pleasing. Business Interiors by Staples was ultimately selected to manage all details of the project, including space planning and design, furniture and fabric selection and delivery and installation.
Customer Quotes
"Business Interiors by Staples was quickly on board with our vision and was an integral part of the design team from day one. Staples' recommendations were spot on, addressing end users' needs while striving for a consistent look and feel throughout The Hospice Center.
Business Interiors by Staples' airtight project management was key to driving this project forward. The furnishings were tailored to meet our exact needs and the project was completed on time and under budget. All in all, a huge success."

The Clark County Center for Community Health (CCCCH) is a $38 million facility that provides convenient access to enhanced social and health services for regional veterans and other community members. Located in Vancouver, Washington, CCCCH is equipped to evaluate individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, while directing them to appropriate long-term care.
The Challenge
Located on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs campus, CCCCH houses a range of service organizations, including the American Legion (Department of Washington Service Division), Clark County Public Health Department, and Clark County Veteran’s Assistance Program, as well as more than 100 inpatient beds for mental health and substance abuse care. With a unique combination of offerings under one roof, CCCCH wanted to create a welcoming and safe environment that would benefit all of its constituents – patients, employees, visitors and young children.
It was critical for the finished space to convey a calming first impression, as many of the individuals visiting the center are anxious about seeking help. Therefore, CCCCH wanted furnishings, fabrics and colors that were comfortable and soothing. In addition, the interior of the facility contained structural support beams and protruding window ledges, which created a potential design challenge, as select areas required specialized furniture.
CCCCH wanted to partner with a commercial interior provider who could transform its 176,000 square feet of space with appropriate furnishings for its administrative offices, waiting areas, exam rooms, conference rooms, break rooms and more. With a grand opening ceremony on the horizon, CCCCH was under a tight timeframe to finalize the space and needed a vendor who could manage the project from start to finish while meeting the organization's aesthetic, budget, safety and installation requirements.
Customer Quotes
"Every customer has its own unique set of requirements and CCCCH was no exception. While cost plays a role in any design and installation, CCCCH was focused on creating child and parent-friendly surroundings that were safe and inviting.
With CCCCH's budget in mind, we recommended furniture that met all the organization’s needs. This resulted in extensive cost savings that was used for specialty fabrics that were attractive, yet easily maintained to meet healthcare standards."

CareFirst, Inc. is the non-profit, non-stock, parent company of CareFirst of Maryland, Inc., and Group Hospitalization and Medical Services, Inc., affiliates that do business as CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. As an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is the largest healthcare insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving nearly 3.1 million members.
The Challenge
One of the most complex and labor-intensive applications for healthcare insurers is new member welcome kits. According to Mikki Keller, Supervisor of Graphics Reproduction, "Membership books are the primary application for our in-plant facility, but we also produce significant overall copy work. Producing membership books is a complex application. The document varies by the individual, corporation, and consumer. Our Maryland site produces around 1.3 million impressions monthly and our DC site generates 4 million impressions."
The Solution
During the times when peak volumes are too large, CareFirst needs an overflow vendor. Procurement evaluates suppliers on turnaround time and price. According to Keller, "We work in a complex print environment and we periodically need overflow print service providers that are capable of producing documents correctly, on time, and with high quality. Staples has frequently been a provider of overflow printing services."
