Hospice of Charleston

The Company

Hospice of Charleston offers comprehensive end-of-life home medical care, as well as in-patient care, at its state-of-the-art facility. Established in 1980, the organization is dedicated to providing quality, compassionate services for patients and families throughout South Carolina’s Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

The Challenge

To meet the needs of patients and families who are unable to manage an advanced illness within their home, Hospice of Charleston wanted to establish an on-site, in-patient facility that would provide around-the-clock care to those in need. With donations from the community, the plans quickly became a reality, and the organization built a 20,000 square-foot facility – The Hospice Center. Hospice of Charleston concentrates on making patients as comfortable and pain free as possible. Therefore, the organization needed an interior design partner who could create a safe, relaxing and home-like environment for patients and their loved ones. With specified funds, attention to budget was mandatory, as was patients’ privacy, and incorporating design elements that were child-friendly, durable and aesthetically pleasing. Business Interiors by Staples was ultimately selected to manage all details of the project, including space planning and design, furniture and fabric selection and delivery and installation.

The Solution

The Business Interiors by Staples team worked closely with the architect and staff from Hospice of Charleston to fully understand the goals for the finished product. Staples provided an accountable, single point of contact, ensuring that all individuals involved knew where to turn with questions or information along the way.

The Staples team researched furniture, fabrics and finishes for the center’s patient rooms, lounge areas, staff offices and break rooms. The end result needed to be warm and inviting, yet each area had unique safety, usage and cleaning requirements to meet rigorous healthcare standards.

Business Interiors by Staples created a showroom at a local hotel with the furniture and fabric selections, allowing the staff from Hospice of Charleston, donors and members of the Board of Directors to see and feel the different options first-hand.

The Results

Through Business Interiors by Staples’ extensive partner relationships and discounts, the total interior design costs for the project comprised less than 10 percent of Hospice of Charleston’s total construction expenses – well within the approved project budget. In addition, the space was completed on schedule, with all furnishings configured to specification and resulting in a home-like and peaceful atmosphere.
